Recently, I indulged in a rare "liquid lunch" with a trusted friend (name withheld to protect the not so innocent). Our annual catch-up meeting evolved into a frank appraisal of my blog. Amidst his slightly slurred remarks, he posed a super-clear, pointed question: "’Lessons’ is insightful, sure, but where's the real Doug?" This query lingered in my thoughts, spurring me to write this introspective piece. My usual fare of macroeconomics, tech finance and markets, business and technological analysis lacked a personal touch, akin to the impersonal nature of a startup's P&L or AOP.
Motivated by his bourbon-infused encouragement to "Try it, you'll like it," I'm venturing beyond my analytical shell to reveal the person behind the posts. The year 2023 was a mosaic of the unexpected and deeply personal, shaping me in profound ways.
Here are my top ten transformative experiences or realizations of 2023:
Israel Adventure: My trip to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem wasn't just a journey across the globe; it was a transformative experience that strengthened my bond with brothers and sisters. The bond has become all the more transformative as a result of the October 7th terrorist invasion.
Challenging Illusions: Witnessing the guise of antisemitism under the veil of "wokeness" at Harvard was a wake-up call, igniting my passion for intellectual integrity and a deeper understanding of today’s higher ed institutions.
AI Ascendancy: The advancement of AI, especially LLMs, stirred a mix of awe, fear and respect within me.
Satya Nadella's Vision: Observing Microsoft CEO's bold use of AI, from investing in OpenAI and Sam Altman, integrating ChatGPT into Microsoft products to reviving Bing among other initiatives, was a poignant lesson in visionary leadership.
Sam Altman's Audacity: Inspired by his experience at OpenAI, I am reminded to challenge norms and pursue transformative, disruptive ideas.
The Value of Integrity: Seeing the repercussions of compromised integrity in startup leadership and governance reinforced its significance and reminded me never to take integrity for granted.
Fortune and Gratitude: Engagements with various innovative companies, led by great leaders who are remarkable individuals, reminded me of the good fortune and gratitude that permeate my life.
The Strength of Friendship: The unwavering support of and interaction with friends like Abhi, Ariel, Charlie, David, Eric, Eytan, Henry, Lionel, Mark, Noel, Tal and others emphasized the importance of male solidarity, companionship and a good cup of coffee.
Learning from My Offspring: My children and grandchildren continue to amaze and teach me; their perspectives and insights are a source of wonder and remind me that life is indeed a circle.
The Fleeting Nature of Life: The loss of my mother and several close friends starkly reminded me of life's precious and ephemeral nature.
This past year, a number of companies have significantly influenced me personally and professionally: Cognoscenti, Hyka, JigsawML, Pella, ReversingLabs, SmartOne, and TeamLift. Collaborating with them has been insightful, inspiring and fulfilling.
And, a special mention to Susana: My partner, my confidante, my force of nature, you continue to be my constant source of strength, support and inspiration.
Let me conclude this last post of 2023 by wishing you, gentle reader, a New Year filled with prosperity and good health.
Thanks once again Doug for the candor, honesty, and insight.
