A sunset in Israel
Adam Bismut, a 35-year-old Israeli entrepreneur and reservist, tragically lost his life along with 20 fellow Israeli soldiers on Monday, January 22, 2024, during a particularly lethal military operation in Gaza. (Full article here.) He was the founder of SightBit, a startup that created an AI system to assist in the rescue of drowning victims at sea, inspired by personally witnessing such a tragedy.
I extend my deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time.
In this edition of “Lessons,” I want to share insights into the unique working environment of Israeli startups, gathered from close friends who manage companies in Israel. These stories are both compelling and revealing.
For instance, a startup CEO recently recounted a board meeting interrupted by air raid sirens, signaling imminent missile threats. Despite this disruption, the CEO, after taking cover, returned to the meeting with remarkable calm, exemplifying the constant presence of conflict in daily life there.
This CEO, along with others, spoke of the challenges facing businesses in such a volatile environment. Many employees are also reservists in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), alternating between their civilian work and confronting life-threatening situations. Tragically, in Israel today there have been many cases of employees or their loved ones being harmed, or losing their lives, especially in the Gaza Strip.
Despite these extraordinary conditions, Israeli startups continue to thrive, driven by a commitment to 'business as usual.’ This resilience is not just about maintaining customer relations but also about supporting the nation's economy during times of conflict.
In a different context, the commitment of Israeli executives and staff to community service is noteworthy. After work hours, many engage in volunteering activities, a stark contrast to the more routine lifestyle of their counterparts in Silicon Valley or Boston, who might typically spend evenings at the gym, have dinner with their families or watching Netflix.
Another perspective comes from Tel Aviv. Despite its proximity to conflict zones, life in this city remains vibrant and seemingly unaffected. However, just a short distance away, Israeli forces engage in intensive operations against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. This contrast highlights the complexity and resilience characterizing life in Israel.
These stories not only shed light on the distinctive challenges faced in Israel but also illustrate the remarkable spirit of resilience and commitment to community and national service that pervades Israeli society.
While we all wish the current reality in Israel had never occurred, the conflict has shed some light on the bravery, dedication and commitment to service that the Israeli people have displayed during this horrific course of events. I know that I have been personally moved by these stories and others, which have challenged me to think about upping my game in some of these areas. Witnessing the light of selflessness and honor shine through the darkness has served as a powerful lesson for this member of the startup world.
I hope you find these accounts enlightening as well.
